Rummy Rules: The Complete 13-Card Reference

This is our full rummy rules reference for 13-card Indian rummy — the format played on Rummy Circle, Junglee Rummy, Yono Rummy and every other app in our rummy app list. If you have never played, start with our how to play rummy walkthrough first, then return here for the fine print.

Setup

• Players: 2 to 6. Two decks are used when more than two players are at the table.
• The deal: 13 cards each, dealt one at a time anti-clockwise.
• The jokers: one card is cut from the deck to set the wild joker rank (all cards of that rank, any suit, become jokers). Printed jokers also count.
• The piles: remaining cards form the closed deck; the top card starts the open discard pile.

Valid Combinations

Pure sequence (mandatory)

Three or more consecutive same-suit cards with no joker: 3♥-4♥-5♥ or 10♠-J♠-Q♠-K♠. Without at least one pure sequence, your declaration is invalid and scores the full 80-point penalty.

Impure sequence

A sequence completed using one or more jokers: 6♦-7♦-PJ-9♦. Valid as your second (or later) sequence.

Sets

Three or four cards of equal rank in different suits: 9♣-9♦-9♥. Duplicate suits make it invalid (9♣-9♣-9♥ does not count when two decks are used).

Gameplay Rules

• Each turn: draw one card (closed deck or open pile), then discard one card.
• You may not pick up your own just-discarded card.
• To declare, discard your final card face-down and show all 13 cards arranged into valid combinations.
• A wrong declaration costs 80 points; the game continues for the remaining players.
• First drop (before playing a card): 20 points. Middle drop: 40 points. Consecutive missed turns count as a middle drop.

Scoring and Formats

Face cards and aces: 10 points. Number cards: face value. Jokers: 0. Unarranged cards at declaration are summed (max 80). The three main formats:

• Points Rummy: one deal, fixed rupee value per point — fastest format, best for beginners.
• Pool Rummy: players are eliminated at 101 or 201 cumulative points; last player standing wins the pool.
• Deals Rummy: a fixed number of deals; the highest chip total after the final deal wins.
